This allowed me to attempt to Maiden two of my new planes. The 90mm Thunderbird EDF and the DG1000 2.6m scale glider.
The Thunderbird's maiden attempt was captured on video and just as well it was quite a funny one. Bottom line is that we need to bungy it of take off or drop it down a hill first. It needs speed which we are unable to generate with our arms. There is a video clip that I need to encode and then I will place it on Youtube for your viewing pleasure.

The DG was more successful however and it had a hair raising maiden flight of where I learnt very quickly that you can not slow this glider down. Slow her down and she drops a wing. Fortunately from a decent height she is recoverable.

Then the other day we decided to make our way home from work early as the weather was going to be the last good weather for a while. The DG1000 after some minor adjustments I had made after the maiden flight was ready to take to the sky.

Upon take off she veered violently to the right and I was concerned she would be over some houses and the last thing I wanted was to try recover her from a death spiral over houses. So I killed the throttle. At this point she was moving to slowly for the control surfaces to have any effect. You can guess what comes next she dips the wing. At about 10m altitude she goes nose down straight into the ground I had no chance of recovering.

So I have one major repair job up ahead rebuilding the nose of the DG. Thankfully the wings remained intact the only thing that bent was the solid metal bar in the middle joining the two wings. So what is the lesson learned here. Well I should have eased the throttle back to obtain level flight and maintaining speed. Not the speed element is critical. At that point tried to correct the veering and trim her out. Failing that attempt a powered on landing straight ahead.

Both of those options would have been a lot better to the airframe.

Soon afterwards however I was flying the Mustang and a mate his Fokker and I went for a fast low flyby which he decided to follow. Here I think he is very brave following me at a greater speed and possibly a lower altitude by a few cm, and then thud his model hits the deck. I off course divert my eyes for a split second to see what happened to his and then I relise mine is following the same path of destruction. Not even a second later mine hits the dirt as well.

Lessons learned here. Do not take your eye off the ball for even a split second especially when flying less than 50cm from the ground at speed. Said thing is we both know that but hell dog fighting is so much fun. Guess we should stick to the EPP slope birds for the dog fighting.

Fortunately the mustang is EPP so a bit of glue here and there and she will be fine. The Fokker however was a wonderful scale model made from depron and she no longer has a nose.

Now the weather is bad I can take a step back and go back to building the Formosa and thinking about how I can start repairing the DG1000. At least I know for a fact that the DG1000 does fly and she flies exceptionally well and has an incredible howling sound as she whizzes by. It is a pity however I could not hear that sound one more time this summer and instead it was replaced by a dull thud with a few hushed O #$#$'s being said.

So learn from my leasons people. ;-)

<!--

While I was sick for the last two weeks the weather has been perfect for flying. Now as soon as the drugs have kicked in and I want to take some young willing people with a buddy box does the weather look shitty. It is dripping here just enough to say no to electic flying and the wind well I could fly but for a newbie on the buddy box it would be a bit harder.
Now this is where the gyro's come in. They would stop this gusty wind behavior, and on a day when we would possible not be able to fly suddenly becomes a flyable day. That is the difference flight time all new comers need is lots of flight time. It just takes practice.

O well at least this gives me the time now to reinstall my machine and get it up and running how I want it. Plus time to go to the garage and finish a model. Today one must be ready for a maiden flight. I think it will be the Thunderbird the 92mm Ducted fan that is going to give me a wake up call. ;-)

Hopefully the weather will be good next weekend to allow for a good maiden flight.

Wish me luck.

<!--

As landing etc wind gusts will not blow the plane away but keep it on track. So if you nose it at the ground and the instructor does not grab it from you, you will be assured that the plane will continue to nose into the ground.

<!--

Now gyro's have traditionally been for helicopters. They are generically unstable so need them to keep things just a bit more organised. Which is a bit weird because heli's generally use them just to keep the tail locked into position and the articles I have been looking at have all been relating to putting them on all surfaces of the plane. So basically anywhere from 1 - 3 gyro's.
Why is this important. Well I have also been watching people learn to fly. Landing things in trees crashing models that they should not perhaps be flying in the first place.

Then the question comes in why are they buying these planes.

1) I think most people don't like the look of trainers. Lets be honest here Piper Cub's are not the reason that people get drawn to RC flying. F16's and high performance jets draw most of the younger generation. Mid generation it is the WW2 combat planes.

2) Once you have mastered the Piper well what do you do with it. A few loops. modify it for Ailerons. Crash it for fun.

This lead me to think if we can get a mildly acrobatic plane. Lower the control surface movements so that it is manageable and then put in an autopilot so that when all things go wrong and they get disorientated they can let go of the controls and it just levels off and flies straight.

So linked to a buddy box with a more skilled pilot at the helm if all things go wrong he can just remove student access let it level out and then bring it up to a safe hight etc.

The other advantage of a gyro is landings it should make things easier in gusty winds to let the student land. Essentially all they have to do is aim it in and bring the throttle down and it should glide in. Should a gust get it gyro will just adjust and plane will land safely.

I feel this will stop many new comers to the hobby becoming frustrated and buying a kit plane taking it up and 5 min later crying and saying that is the end of it.

Obviously once they get used to the orientation you can start turning off the gyros one by one.

I see some major benefits of this method.

1) Can go up with a more decent plane.
2) Don't have to wait for a perfectly calm day. Bit of gusts will not affect the model too much.
3) Will give the instructor a bit more help in recovering some dangerous situations in which students leave the models sometimes. ;-)

To prove this I have a Formosa which I am putting together and I am seriously thinking of putting 2 gyros into it. One for elevator and one for the ailerons.

Once it is built I will allow new comers to the hobby to try it out. With me on the master remote obviously. So keep an eye on the progress here.

If you want to be a test crash flier let me know. You never know when you might get a chance to learn to fly this new trainer.

<!--

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20." Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get their "fair share"?

They realised that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everyone's share, then the fifth and the sixth would each end up being paid to drink their beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each drinker's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so:

The fifth person, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the drinkers began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth. She pointed to the tenth man, "but he got $10!" "Yes, that's right," exclaimed the fifth. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I did" "That's true!!" shouted the seventh. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor"

The nine drinkers surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible!

<!--

Cloudy and fine is more like it. However I can't complain it is not raining at least.

I am baby sitting today as the wife is on a first aid course. So the plan was to take McKayla out to the park and let her burn off some energy and spend quality time with her. However the poor thing has told me the inside of her ear is sore and promptly put herself to sleep on the couch while watching her Barbie DVD.

Although we did bring up my old train set from the garage and set that up as she seems to be fascinated by trains these days. She had a great time letting it run round in circles.

The soaring comp that I was going to take part in tomorrow has been canceled due to the wind blowing in the wrong direction. So a mate and myself have decided to go to another hill to let me get some practice in. Especially seeing I have never slope soared a model before. ;-) Never a better time to learn then in a comp. ;-)

O well time to do some research on aquaponics and let the little one have her sleep. Hopefully she will wake a feeling a bit better.

<!--

However tried geocaching for the first time. What a disaster... 3 attempts all failures. So will try a few here in Howick shortly and see what I find.

The good news is that it was a good reset of the brain and I got to spend some quality time with my daughter and wife. No phones not computers except looking at the weather site as the weather was very weird. Again it was mangled this time fatally. However I have since learned its weakness not enough power. The mustang pull almost vertical. I however saw in the news that there were anti-porn protesters marching in front of the parade.

Again I have no problem with the anti-porn protesters it is there right to protest.

However I do have an objection to there banners.

In particular "Porn fuels rape". So does that make 99% of the male population and a large portion of the female population that watch porn rapists.

Sad part is no one is to blame for rape except the sick son of a b1tch that rapes someone. Many factors are involved in this sick persons mind. Most of these are a result of how they are raised. Being a mommies boys are the most psychotic serial killers and rapists. So based on this lets say "mothers fuel rapists". Ridiculous I know but it is the truth.

So to the "Stop Demand" group your message about rape being bad has been overshadowed by your closed mindedness. Next time think about your banners... if it had said stop rapists, or stand up against abuse, or speak up about rape all fine and well, and it would have been well placed.

I however am all for the Eastern method of dealing with rapists. Chop them so they can't rape... Simple effective and it does not cost the tax payer as much as a jail cell. Plus it is a good deterrent. We are far to kind to these sick criminals.

In short we have no problem letting kids watch films where people get blown up but let a boob fall out and then all these protesters fall out the wood work.

Just my 2c...

<!--

Got one good circuit in and then it start pouring down with rain so run back to the car.

Later on I take a drive to the field by myself as I want to get her to fly. After a frustrating first session of her just wanting to take off from the ground and not getting there I decided that her battery must be flat. So I charge it.

10 min later she is charged and ready to go. Yippee. After the second attempt to take off with the new propeller she lifts and sores into the sky.

Start turning her and relise she is getting a bit close to the tennis grounds so I decide time to make a shaper turn. Opps she start diving. Not a problem Level out open throttle and nose a bit down ok she is entering a steep dive pull up... pull up... pull up.... she just goes faster... Thud crunch cartwheel, I just hear the kids and parents in the parks that were watching go AAWWWWWWWWWWW..

Long story short the Piper Cub is no more. The starboard wing was ripped off the tail was ripped off, I also suspect the airframe has been twisted and beyond repair. Or lets put it this way I don't think I will trust her airframe with all the cracks I see in it. The new propeller I bought her finally broke after all the nose dives and cartwheels she has had in the past few days. The ironic part is the Undercarriage which usually just falls apart on landing was perfectly fine.

So all the internals will be used in a new model I will build to replace her. A nice pylon racer I think. Something like a Red Bull air racer.

Anyway here are the pictures of the sad end to a proud Piper Cub.
<!--
