Slight correction on my previous theory

The gyro will not resume level flight however they will maintain the direction that the plane was put in.

This still suits the beginner plane. As landing etc wind gusts will not blow the plane away but keep it on track. So if you nose it at the ground and the instructor does not grab it from you, you will be assured that the plane will continue to nose into the ground.
